The Village Social
The Village Social is off to a fantastic start — and this is just the beginning. Evolving from our much-loved pop-up bar, it now has a fresh identity, a clearer purpose and a new name to take us forward: The Village Social.
More than an occasional pop-up, The Village Social is becoming a regular fixture in village life. Opening consistently throughout the year, with a short pause over Christmas and New Year, it is creating a relaxed, welcoming space where families, friends and neighbours can come together more often.
Built around our simple ethos — Drinks • Friends • Community — The Village Social is about strengthening connections and giving the community more reasons to gather. We’ll be open on the last Friday of each month, and every second week during May, June, July, August and September, making it even easier to drop in, catch up and unwind.
With community at its heart, The Village Social offers a warm, family-friendly setting where everyone can feel welcome. Children are welcome, well-behaved dogs can come along too, and we’re excited to see it grow into a regular highlight of the village calendar — a place to meet, belong and help shape what comes next.

More to come
We're delighted to say that there is much more planned for the future. Our current priority is to upgrade the toilet facilities and increase storage space by reconfiguring the existing disabled toilet area. These improvements will make the hall more practical, accessible and enjoyable for everyone who uses it.
Looking beyond this, and subject to funding, we would love to install a new kitchen, create an outdoor terrace and seating area, refresh the décor, and replace the flooring throughout the building. In the longer term, improving parking facilities remains an important objective.
These projects represent a significant investment in the future of our community facility. While we have secured some funding already, we need to raise around £150,000 to deliver the larger improvements, particularly the toilet and kitchen projects.
We are already approximately one-third of the way towards achieving that goal.
Income from hall hire for group meetings, fitness classes and private functions continues to play a vital role in supporting the hall, helping to offset rising running and maintenance costs associated with an ageing building.
You can help by supporting our events, using the Village Social bar, booking the hall, and taking part in raffles. Every contribution, no matter how big or small, makes a real difference.
If you are aware of local businesses, grant opportunities or fundraising ideas that we could explore, or if you would like to make a donation, we would be delighted to hear from you.

What's next
Over the past year, the Cottingham and Middleton Mill Community Hub and Village Hall trustees have worked together to make a number of improvements to the Village Hall. These enhancements have been funded through the Village Social (formerly the Pop-Up Bar) and community events including the Summer Fete, Quiz Nights, Wine Tastings and Safari.
Over the last 18 months, we have installed new bifold doors overlooking the playing fields, added external signage, introduced free Wi-Fi, and upgraded the bar area with new lighting and a new fridge. Most recently, we have added a serving window, enabling us to serve customers both inside and outdoors, as well as improving the external lighting around the hall. Everything achieved so far has been made possible through our fundraising efforts and the fantastic support of the local community.
This year alone, our key fundraising activities have raised more than £5,100 through the Village Fete, over £2,700 through the Village Social bar, and more than £1,400 through our Wine Tastings. Most recently, the Chase the Joker raffle, run in association with the Village Social, raised over £930 which included a donation of the entire jackpot winnings of £700 from winner who found the Joker. With further events planned for the remainder of the year, we hope to build on this success.
A huge thank you to everyone who has helped make this happen, including organisers, volunteers, supporters and attendees. Your contribution is greatly appreciated.
Organisation
Both the Mill Community Hub and Cottingham & Middleton Village Hall are registered charities, each with its own board of trustees. All trustees are volunteers who generously give their time to support and develop these valuable community assets.
The trustees meet jointly each month at the Village Hall, typically mid-month on a Wednesday early evening, for governance purposes and to oversee ongoing activities, fundraising and future plans.
We are fortunate to have a wonderful group of volunteers from across the villages who support events such as the Village Fete and the Village Social. These events are not only crucial for fundraising, but also provide valuable opportunities for our community to come together and connect.
As volunteer-led charities, we are enormously grateful for the time and commitment our trustees and volunteers give. We understand that everyone balances community involvement with work, family and personal commitments, so every contribution, however large or small, is appreciated. By sharing responsibilities across a wider group of people, we can continue to deliver events and improvements without placing too much demand on any individual.
As we look ahead, we anticipate some changes to our trustee and volunteer teams in the coming year. If you have a little time to spare and would like to become involved as a trustee or volunteer, we would be delighted to hear from you.
